Data Sources
Country-Level Sources
Every facility in HealthScope traces back to an authoritative Ministry of Health registry. Below, the source powering each country in the portal.
Botswana
MoH Master Facility List (MFL) — Ministry of Health & Wellness master facility register, supplemented with published services and infrastructure data.
Ethiopia
Master Facility Registry (MFR v2) — Ethiopian Ministry of Health's national facility registry. Geocoded via a per-woreda process (see Ethiopia country page).
Kenya
Kenya Master Health Facility Registry (KMHFR) — MoH's authoritative facility register, published by the Health Sector Monitoring & Evaluation Unit.
Malawi
Master Health Facility Registry (MHFR / Zipatala) — MoH & Population's national online facility database, replacing the older CMED spreadsheet-based list.
Nigeria
Nigeria Health Facility Registry (HFR) — Federal Ministry of Health's dynamic Master Facility List, integrated with NHMIS on DHIS2 for data flow.
Tanzania
MoH Health Facility Registry (HFR) Portal — Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly & Children — national facility registry with services and infrastructure data.
Uganda
National Health Facility Registry (NHFR) — Ministry of Health's authoritative facility database, complemented by the eHMIS reporting platform (DHIS2).
Zambia
Master Facility List (MFL) — Zambia Ministry of Health's national online facility directory, maintained alongside HMIS/HRIS platforms.
How the sources fit together
- Primary: Ministry of Health master facility registries — one per country, above.
- Cross-reference: OpenStreetMap facility tags, used only to validate coordinates and flag likely coverage gaps. Never overrides the MoH record.
- Not used: commercial listings, aggregators, or crowdsourced portals that don't disclose their upstream source.
All eight sources are refreshed on a rolling basis; see the About page for the ETL cadence.
Data Harmonization Methodology
All source datasets are harmonised to a common schema: unique facility ID, official name, administrative hierarchy (country / region / district), facility type (hospital / clinic / health centre), ownership (public / private / faith-based / NGO), GPS coordinates, operational status, last-verification date, and service availability indicators. Quality assessment includes duplicate detection, coordinate validation against the country bounding box, admin-hierarchy consistency checks, and temporal completeness.
